What is PVC decking?

Cellular PVC decking is a solid, wood-free synthetic material manufactured from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin. Unlike traditional wood or wood-plastic composite decks, it contains no wood fibers, making it entirely resistant to rot, mold, and moisture absorption. The cellular structure provides rigidity and dimensional stability across temperature swings, which matters in the Greater Charlotte region's humid summers and occasional freeze-thaw cycles.

The material is denser and heavier than most composite decking products, which means it requires proper joinery and support but also delivers a stable platform that resists surface denting from furniture or impact. PVC decking does absorb and reflect more heat than composite alternatives, making it considerably hotter underfoot on full-sun applications during summer months.

Key practical differences from composite boards include zero wood content (eliminating splinters), minimal surface staining, and no annual staining or sealing requirements. The trade-off is that PVC decks typically cost more upfront than standard pressure-treated wood but perform predictably over time with routine cleaning. Some installers treating PVC as a specialty material, so availability varies among local composite-decking providers.
